by definition.

Preserve rather than replace.

Why it matters

VESTBY is more than an exhibit. She is a working vessel, a story and a responsibility.

Built for the sea and preserved for more than a century, she carries the marks of many hands and voyages. Our aim is her long-term preservation – carefully planned, transparent and step by step.

Since 1920

From Borhaug to the sea

VESTBY was commissioned by Adolf B. Olsen and built by shipbuilder Julius Tjørve in Borhaug on Norway’s Lista coast. Her keel was laid late in 1919; she was launched as a wooden cargo schooner on 9 October 1920. Coastal freight and Icelandic fishing followed, before major conversions later in her working life.

Restoration with purpose

Safety before beauty.
Substance before speed.

The work follows a clear sequence: safety and seaworthiness, preservation of the wooden structure, then deck, rig, engineering and fitting-out.

  1. 01

    Secure the vessel

Assess and prioritise hull, watertightness, seacocks, bilge and safety systems.

  2. 02

    Preserve the fabric

Repair planking, joints, caulking and structural areas using appropriate craft methods.

  3. 03

    Make her usable again

Develop deck, rig and technical systems for safe, lasting operation.

Openly documented

Restoration is craft – and it will be visible.

Where it is safe and practical, progress, decisions and traditional craft will be documented and shared with the public.
